Named for the quote by Robert Louis Stevenson, “There are no foreign lands. It is the traveller only who is foreign,” the Peter Doig exhibition at the Musée des beaux-arts is a vibrant glimpse into the colourful life of Trinidad. The Scottish-born artist has lived in Edinburgh, London and Montreal before settling in Trinidad where he’d also lived for a period during his childhood. The paintings are extra large and quite stunning. No wonder Doig is considered one of the biggest contemporary names in the art world. His painting “White Canoe” sold for $11.3 million in 2007, breaking auction records for a living European artist. My friend, Thomas Bastien who works for The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts told me that it takes Doig 3-5 years to complete a painting and that there is a waiting list of art patrons who wish to acquire one. I’m glad that I was able to admire his paintings during a private viewing that Thomas organized for a few journalists and bloggers one night last week. Be sure to check out the show, which is on until May 4th.
As a tribute to Doig’s Scottish heritage, the Sofitel is serving up special Hendrick’s gin cocktails for a limited time. Since they are just down the street from the MdBA, why not make it an outing? The art of gin, is another art form that I support!
