IBÉRICA is an attractive new spot for Spanish tapas and cuisine located in the heart of Montreal’s downtown, on rue Peel. Serving up simple Spanish fare from: Ibérica ham and other charcuteries, manchego cheese, buttered shrimp, grilled asparagus and smoked sardines, to more substantial dishes like paella and grilled beef or fish.
Yet, it won’t be only the food that will entice you to try this new restaurant, but also the décor, which was dreamt up by Montreal’s most prolific bar and restaurant designer, Zébulon Perron. I was swooning over the mix of industrial wall and ceiling finishes with a nod to old Victorian charm in the backlit and bevelled mirrors and warm wood accents. This mix is also perfectly translated by two main features: the stunning bar which reaches the top of the restaurant’s 30-foot ceiling and is filled with vintage crystal and glass decanters and the ultra-modern and enormous chandelier over the main dining area. Every detail is to be admired, right down to the tapas-sized embroidered linen napkins.
I was invited to discover Ibérica during a private dinner held for Montreal’s “Movers and Shakers” last week and I was thrilled to have the chance to try such an elaborate selection from the menu while enjoying time spent with old and new friends. (Hi, Geri and Tuti!)
Some of my personal highlights from our meal were, the Ibérica ham, of course, the fit-for-an-army-sized paella (yes, I had seconds) and the buttery grilled sea bream.
The wines we enjoyed were all from Portugal, right down to a tawny port served with the crispy and decadent churros. Accompanied by two dipping sauces: spicy chocolate and dulce de leche. I must (not) go back for more!
If it’s Spanish food you’re craving and yet, you prefer somewhere chic to enjoy your meal, then make your next reservation at Ibérica.
