Last month, I was invited to try two very different hotels on the same street in Quebec City. Le Saint Pierre and Hotel 71 are located in the heart of the old part of the city and are side by side. I had a great stay at both hotels, but I preferred one over the other. Find out which was my fave and let me know where you like to stay when you visit la Vieille Capitale! The charming and rustic Saint Pierre is in a historical 19th-century building. We were staying in a large suite which had its own kitchen and dining area, living room and sunken bath in the bedroom. We liked the country-chic decor, the original creaky-hardwood and the giant antique windows (that actually opened) overlooking the cobblestone street behind the hotel. It was quaint and romantic. The Saint Pierre would be a great choice for any couple or family who like to have a lot of space. There was even a sofa bed in the living room. Breakfast is included and served, à la carte, in a pretty little dining room on the main floor. My omelette was excellent! Hotel 71 (named for its address) is a more modern affair, compared to the Auberge. Next to the lobby, you’ll find a boutique and coffee room where you can purchase the same types of pillows and duvets found in the rooms, or even designer candles made in Quebec. There’s also an art gallery on the 2nd floor where you can admire (and purchase) works by local artists. Our room, number 730 (the concierge said it’s her fave), is a superior room located on the top floor of the hotel. With large windows overlooking the Saint-Lawrence and Old Quebec City, the view alone won our vote. The decor reminded me a lot of the Germain hotels, which I love, so I felt right at home at the 71. There was even a Nespresso machine in our room and if you follow me, you know I’m a major fan.
At Hotel 71, the Italian restaurant Il Matto is a popular spot among tourists and locals. We were happy to try it as part of our invitation. Our dinner was excellent and if you don’t want to leave the comfort of your room, you can have inventive and comforting Italian cuisine delivered to you. The continental breakfast is also served here in the mornings.
If you’re planning a getaway to Quebec City, both hotels are great and the prices are very reasonable at the moment. A superior room at Hotel 71 is about $200-250 and a suite at the Auberge is roughly $255-300 per night. Don’t forget, you’ll be close to everything, and that alone is worth it!
A special thanks to the Auberge Saint-Pierre and Hotel 71 for the memorable stay.
