(English) Mortimer Snodgrass: a girl’s best gift shop in Old Montreal

If you’re in Old Montreal and you want to find a little something for yourself or a friend (or your kids, or your dog, or your boss, or, or, or…) then Mortimer Snodgrass is the place. I go there whenever I need to find a gift or greeting card and sometimes I go in just because it’s fun to see what kinds of silly and new things they’ve got in store. On one of these occasions I met co-owner Virginia Champoux (she and her zany hubby, Jay Sokoloff are the owners) and she helped me discover some very unique zurbaine items.

An entire portion of one wall in the store holds these lovely laptop and iPad sleeves from the company BUILT – I chose the striped one in pinks and oranges, of course. Not only does it protect my laptop, but it’s also reversible! Hot pink on the outside for when I feel like colour-blocking with a specific outfit. Next discovery were these practical, reusable and collapsible Vapur water bottles. I keep one of each in different bags so I never get dehydrated and yes, they do come in other great colours besides pink and orange. For the ultimate girly-girl, Virginia suggested these tea cup cupcake molds. Made from silicone – you bake the cupcake right in the teacup and then serve it on the little plastic saucer that comes with for a very elegant effect. Pinkies up!

One fabulous fact about the store is that they have a balloon service – for a friend’s 50th, I ordered 50 helium balloons ($1.50 each) and for $5 they were delivered right to the party. Another fab fact about Mortimer Snodgrass is the origins of its name which is actually the name of Virginia and Jay’s beloved canine who’s been around a bit longer than the original store which was on Saint-Paul street.

So, next time you’re in the Old Port, stop by the new old Mort!
