Hôtel le Germain Charlevoix

Germain Charlevoix
In January I hit the highway and headed to Baie-Saint-Paul. How come? Because I was invited for a VIP experience at the Hôtel le Germain Charlevoix. Formerly known as La Ferme, the Germain hotel group took it over last summer. And with good reason because it’s one of the most beautiful spots and one of the most creative hotels in Quebec. As soon as we arrived we had a tour of the five pavilions where one really has the choice thanks to five unique themes. My favourite was in the Le Clos building but there is definitely a room, a suite, a loft or even a dormitory for everyone. Here are five reasons why you should book your stay…
Hotel Germain Baie-Saint-Paul
The view and location. Baie-Saint-Paul is simply breathtaking and the hotel is located directly at the mouth of the bay. Do ask for a room with a view toward it.
Le Clos Germain Charlevoix
The rooms are design-y, but not overly. You’ll feel cozy in whichever one you choose. I suggest studying the different types of rooms online before making a decision. Whether you’re a family, single or in a relationship, there’s a perfect room for you. If I go back, I would definitely ask for a superior room in Le Clos (shown above). Rustic yet chic, I loved the minimalist and monochrome look and that tub! All the rooms at the hotel are equipped with a Nespresso Pixie – one of my favourite gadgets. Les Labours restaurant
The restaurants. There are two: Les Labours and Le Bercail. The three meals I had at the hotel were all great. The menu at Les Labours (the fancier of the two) is seasonal and features locally-sourced ingredients. Le Bercail is more laid-back, where you can get cozy by the fire and order a pizza cooked in the wood oven. The desserts at the hotel are amazing thanks to their master pastry chef. We even enjoyed a chocolate truffle workshop with him… so good!
spa-du-verger
The spa du Verger is a MUST. Located directly behind the main pavilion, the spa is a haven where I could’ve spent all day. With hot tubs and a cold tub outside, you have an amazing view on the bay. Inside, there’s a steam room, a sauna and even a snow shower. Book a massage and you’ll be sure to leave your stress behind.
Patinoire Germain Charlevoix
The little extras. Since my stay was during Winter, I took advantage of the fact that there’s a skating rink just outside the back door of the main building. You can borrow a pair of skates at reception and do a few laps before ordering a hot chocolate on the terrace of the Bercail. Or, try the s’mores next to the campfire at night. You can also borrow snowshoes and go for a trek around the site. In summer, there’s an outdoor pool, organic gardens and even grazing sheep. And for the fitness fans, there’s always the fully-equipped gym.

The only thing is that it’s a bit far. Plan to drive a good four hours from Montreal and be sure to stay at least two nights to be able to enjoy the hotel and Charlevoix. There are many activities to enjoy such as: downhill or cross-country skiing, brunch, hiking, golfing, biking, or even whale-watching (when the bay isn’t frozen). You can also take the train from Quebec City directly to the hotel in Summer. So practical!

The location is stunning and the service is top-notch. I’m already planning on heading back with the boyfriend this summer to see the hotel and the bay in a different season and to really enjoy it.

Note : The hotel is also great for groups and weddings. We were treated to a wedding experience complete with a dinner with live musicians in the Multi hall. Executed in a minimalist style true to the hotel, it was a wonderful evening and an inspiration for any future bride or wedding planner.
