(English) Restaurant Helena: Fine Portuguese dining in Old Montreal

Simply one of the best meals I’ve had this year! At Helena, one of the latest restaurants to open in Old Montreal, diners will be delighted. If you’re craving rich and savoury fish, seafood and meat prepared with Old European savvy and served in a modern and charming environment, then Helena is the perfect choice. I had the pleasure of dining at this new Portuguese restaurant with a group of food writers during what I would call an epic meal (eight courses, to be exact). We feasted on everything from cod cakes to octopus carpaccio to smoky black pudding to candied suckling pig with clams. I hadn’t enjoyed a meal quite like it since my trip to Portugal two years ago.

Helena Loureiro is the gracious chef the restaurant is named after. Helena’s first restaurant, Portus Calle (on the Main), serves similarly amazing food, but her new restaurant on McGill Street is grander, with its high ceilings, modern decor and authentic, unpretentious food. Try the mixed grill ($15) from the warm tapas menu – the spicy grilled chouriço, mixed with octopus and squid, will transport you to Portugal. Pair your dishes with Portuguese wine from the well-stocked cellar and wrap up your evening with some mini Pasteis de Natas (Portuguese custard tarts), or some churros and chocolate while sipping a smooth glass of porto.

Bom apetite!
